Week 11: Cyberbullying

I did not go to class this week because they were talking about hard things happening online and I preferred to not listen to that. I know it could be really interesting but I did not feel really confident with this subject. Last week, in class, we also talk a little about deviance online and especially cyberbullying. It is one kind of bullying which happen online. Email, chat rooms, social networking services, text messages, instant messages, website postings, blogs or a combinations of means are some medias where we often find this problem.

The harasser wants to embarrass and humiliate his target subject. A bully always feels that he is stronger than everyone, and harasses those who seem smaller or weaker. Unfortunately, the number of bullying incidents reported continues to increase either young boys or girls. Children bullying starts at school and is extended after to the Internet.

Bullying never happen one time. It often keeps going over and over again…

This is a really problem, and I think the people who are concerned by this problem really need to talk to others to solve it fast, even if it is not easy to do. If it is not taken seruously it can really ruin life..

Week 10: Riots

This week in class, we continue to talk about activism and the Arab Spring. Then, we focus on London’s riot and everything happening during this time.

To take an other example to illustrate that, I will again come back to Toulouse , the city where I live in France. The context of the beginning of the problem is the death of Rémi Fraisse. Rémi was an opponent to the construction of the controversial dam, located in Sivens, in the Tarn. He was shot from a policeman by an offensive grenade during the 25th of October 2014 night.

After that, a lot of riots happen to protest against police brutality and to commemorate the death of Rémi.  This was during more than one month; every weekend. A lot of demonstrations take place. Even if they were illegal, some people were here just to break everything and to fight with the police, using violence and not only to remember Rémi.

Week 9: Community & Actvivism

This week in class we talk about Social Media’s power during « special events », such as Barack Obama’s campaign and the Arab Spring.

Both of them uses Internet to communicate and they use a lot the hashtag they created to generate content. Social medias are a really good way to communicate about something because it can be see be the entire world and instantly. For example, during the Arab Spring, Twitter has been use a lot to keep people aware about the event  for example the time and the place for meetings. People also used it to post pictures & videos and everyone in the world can know what happen.

While we were talking about that I cannot stop thinking about what happenned this year in France. January 7th, 2015, two individuals were killed in the offices of Charlie Hebdo newspaper in Paris. Social Medias were used as a massive medium to communicate with everybody with the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie (« I am Charlie »). This slogan started to be use everywhere to represent our solidarity. And this does not stop here, because people put profile picture with this slogan or city in France illuminate one building with it to.

This is one picture from the place where I live in France.

This hashtag can be divided in three categories (most of the people were in the two first one):
– Those in solidarity for the families of the victims
– The fighting for freedom of speech
– Those who see the opportunity to attack Islam for the actions of three individuals.(Reference: http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Europe/2015/0107/JeSuisCharlie-What-does-Twitter-activism-accomplish-video)

Week 8: Social Media, Online Dating & Pornography

Last week, we talk about online dating and pornography. To be honest, I never use these kinds of apps and website that exist because I do not want to and I am not interested about that content. I just know some men who use apps to meet women because they think the contact is easier through your screen. They first want to chat with women and then they really hope to meet them in real to see if they can be together.

In my opinion, I think it can be really dangerous; especially we people using these apps are young because people do not say the truth in their profile. They can lie about their age and everything…

Also, for pornography website I think this is really bad to navigate and watch video on it because it is not like in real. The first experience of sexual relations is on the Internet and at 11 years old. The fact is that they see unrealistic body and act and then, they try to do the same. Sometimes a relation can be broken because of this problem.

When I came back in France, I saw reportage about something called “Cam Girls” on the television. For me, I think it can be considered as pornography. It was about girls who chat with other people with the webcam. When some men pay a certain amount of money, the girl needs to show more of her body, and they are paid for that. For example we saw one woman who has 20 years old and she uses that as a work. She earns 5000€ a month for that because sometimes she has 7000 voyeurs at the same time paying for her. She is not shocked about that because it is not a real relation with people. They do not touch each other. The thing is that she does not want to have a real job in France because with that she earns a lot of money and more than another work. But I think she never think about the future because one time, her body will change and she cannot do that anymore. Moreover, she does this “job” without hiding her face and everybody can recognise her in the street. I really think that is incredible for me because she can meet someone crazy who just recognise her and force her to do things.

Finally, we talk about the impact of social media in a relation. I think it is not a good idea to have an account in a social media. For example, Facebook is really bad because when your profile is not really protected, everybody can see it . You are spied and especially your boyfriend can see everything. After he can be mad because we talk with another man. We cannot really have friends of the opposite sex because of the jealousy.

Week 7: Social Media

This week, we talk about social media and especially how teenagers use them in their life.

As we all know, social media can be recognize as being part of people’s day. When they wake up, one of the first things they do is to check what happens during the night in their social media.
While time is running, new social media appear and now it is hard to not use one of them during one day. For example, is you want to listen some music, your first reflex is to go in Youtube. There, you can have your profile, create your playlist, like and comment other videos. Then, when you want to talk with a friend, you can text him or use Facebook, Snapchat…

These last social media are really use by young teenagers. They can have positive and negative points, depending how you use them. Teenagers can like, comment, post and share everything they want, without any controls. You can see in some profile teenagers who share every details of their life. They do not really realise that it can be bad for their future, and the consequences. Besides, most of the time they did not protect their profile, and everybody can see it.

If most of the social media existing are not really good, depending of how you use it; some of them can be good for you and your future. For example, LinkedIn or Viadeo (the same in France) are professional social media. In your profile, you can write your CV with your courses and experiences, and you can be in contact with other professional who might need you in their company. Thanks to them you can sometimes get a placement or a work because people saw you profile and found it interesting. Unfortunately, the majority does not use these social media.

Week 6 : ‘InRealLife’ Documentary

This week we watched the documentary called ‘InRealLife’, which show the life of young teenagers, spending all their time on internet.

For me I was really surprised and almost shocked at the beginning, when I saw these two guys openly talking about porn and their obsession about it. I knew that at their ages most of young men are looking at that but they was at the extreme point. When one of them says that he cannot have a girlfriend because it is not like in the porn videos he always watch, I think they are really living in an other world, in their dreams. They also make competitions about who is going to see one lady breasts via video chat. I found this just incredible… They never understand what they are doing, and what can happen after : consequences about their acts.

It is true that we live in a digital society. Everybody is connected to the Internet with his computer, or all the time with his smartphone. Sometimes people uses this too much that they become addict of these technologies. With the Internet, you can find everything really fast, and most of the time for free, like these porn videos they look. We can communicate with everybody in the entire world without seeing them, or just to keep in touch like the other example. I think this can be a good thing, because thanks to this, I can still communicate with Erasmus friend who came back to Brazil. But we need to be aware about the risks which exist, and we need to inform everybody about that, especially children. They cannot imagine online dangers if they do not learn it. As you are growing up, you start knowing it by the education. Even when you enter at university, I remember to had two classes just dedicated to Facebook and his use, to show us that even if we are really carefull, there is no 0 risk.

Seeing this documentary, I am a bit afraid about the future, and how people are going to be in 10 years if it starts like that, but I think if we inform a lot people, this can stay under control. I think this documentary show the real but it uses strong examples to insist and exaggerate everything. Everything is not as tragic as that the documentary showed but problems exist. This was a really interesting documentary that allow us to think more about something we use everyday !

Week 5 : Fan Culture

Today we talk in class about Fan Culture. You can be fan of lots of things such as music, series or sport.

During our tutorial class, we need to find one period of our life when we were fan of something.
For me it was sport, especially swimming. Since I learn how to swim at 8 years old, it became a really strong passion for me. The year after, I started doing some competitions and I was training 4 days a week when I had class, and two times a day during the holidays. When my parents did not want me to go swimming, I was sometimes crying because for me I cannot miss any lessons. I was really addicted and sometimes I went to competition from Thursday to Sunday.

For me this fan period was a really good experience because I learn how to be organised in my school work if I want to go training. Also, I met lots of person who have the same passion. For me swimming was the only way to escape and enjoy my time.

During the class, we talk about Bronies Fan (My little pony), and One Direction’s one.

In this last documentary we can see teenagers girls who are really fan of this group. As they are young, music is part of their lives, they make friend with the same interest. They are really fan of their songs but also about their person. They can be compared as hysterical, always screaming when they see them. They are ready to wait a lot of hours just to hope to see them at the airport for example.
Some of the girls make tatoo about lyrics or images that can make them close to the boys.

Besides, these fans are always connected with them thanks to the Internet and especially the social media such as Twitter where they can follow them. With that, they think they know everything about them and are closer to them. But this can be sometimes really dangerous and crazy when they pretend to kill themselves just because one of them does not follow them or answer. Also they are ready to kill each other just to see them.
