Week 4 – Moral panic

This week, we especially talk about moral panic. ‘A moral panic is an intense feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order. Moral panics are in essence controversies that involve arguments and social tension, and in which agreement is difficult because the matter at its centre is taboo. The media are key players in the dissemination of moral indignation, even when they do not appear to be consciously engaged in crusading or muckraking. Simply reporting the facts can be enough to generate concern, anxiety or panic.’ (Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_panic)

Moral panic have 5 characteristics, which are : Concern, Hostility, Consensus, Disproportionality and Volatility.

We talk a lot about Rave culture, but I will focus more on online moral panic.
Last year, while I was surfing on Internet, I saw on my Facebook home page lots of video with some of my friends drinking one full glass of alcohol in one time, and then nominate two or three other people. These persons need to do the same in the next 24 hours. First, I was really shocked seing these images because I found this really stupid and very dangerous. After a talk with some of my friends, I saw that they were really excited about this « Neknomination » game and they really want to do it, waiting for someone who will nominate them.

I did not really understand them because for me it is stupid and this can just brings problems for them. I decided to never do it if somebody nominate me even if people are going to say that I am not a funny girl and will try to put some pressure on me. I think all these people just do that because they want to show that they are « strong » and they can do it with a lot of alcohol. After, everybody in our class will talk about them.

In fact, few days after, I saw lots of articles in newspaper talking about this viral « game » coming from Australia, and I realise that now it is in all the world. In France, you « just » need to drink one glass, but in some other country you need to drink one bottle. I really hope that everything stop soon because there are few died people now, and people still « play » this game. They never realise the fact that it can be dangerous for them and the other; they just think about being in a group.
